Information about Black Lion pub  image
Pub review: The Black Lion is the oldest building in Epping High Street, it is a two sided pub, each one is independently accessible. You will have to leave one side to get to the other, either via the front street entrance or via the back garden. The left side initially seems to be the smaller of the two sides, but actually goes way back to a tabled lounge type area which is quite quiet.

The right hand side is bigger and is more locally populated. During the day / early evening it is frequented by the great and the good of Epping's remaining drinking establishment. There is a roaring log fire which is always lit during the colder days, but it does have a tendency to fill the pub with smoke if not tended correctly. The pub is full of fire experts, none of whom can manage this conflagration. It's a very 'oldy worldy' pub, traditional extreme.

There is always a good selection of good quality real ale, many guest ales and a good selection of drinks. Recent landlords have just been run of the mill when it comes to caring about the drinks, however the new landlord Colin has done much to improve this and prides himself on his good clean beer, he's always changing the guest ales which the customers really love. The wine selection is not the best, but efforts are being made to improve this. The food is good and extremely well priced. There is no juke box (nice) the music is chosen by the landlord or barman, which is gives a good variety, if only they would notice when the CD ends or skips. Silence is not golden. traditionally groovy. Long may it remain.

Snacks are always available, situated in wall peg bars, the ones near the top are also near a small spot light beaming down on them. This slightly heats them. Don't worry, warm pork scratchings are the future! If you get a pack of either scratchings or crisps, enjoy them, it's a freaky improvement.

The crisps are hand cooked 'real crisps' from Sirhowy Valley Foods Ltd. They are excellent, and contain many folded crisps, just the way we like them. Folded crisps are also the future! If crisp companies can be bothered to do crinkle cut, skins on and the like, surely they could make a predominantly folded crisp variety, nice!

There is really only one problem with the Black Lion, and that is the service. When you get served, things are fine, it's just getting one of the staff to notice that you might be waiting. They always seem to be round the left hand side. With no mirror to see people waiting on the right, and no 'hotel reception' bell to attract then from the left, you can sometimes wait an annoyingly long time to be served.
