Hairy Bar Snack Review: Well first things first, the name: Bar Snax, pretty good, we know where you are coming from, even if the spelling is not perfect. The word ‘pork scratchings’ seems to be secondary to the term bar snax, there must be a reason for this, but who knows? A nice looking bag with the brewer’s horse and cart, simple and traditional.
So on to the contents, a nice smell that does not smell salty like some other brands. A very good selection of shapes and sizes, no machine cuts visible here. Unusually there are some very thin pieces, wafer thin, thinner than the thinnest scratching we have ever seen. No hairs.
Really really crunchy and fresh, but nothing that would break your jaw. Perfect crunch, like you would pick if you had a choice. Every scratching seems fairly light in colour, nothing overdone or burnt.
As the 95g pack is consumed, the saltiness increases, not in a bad way, but you might need another pint to quench your thirst.
Every piece seems to have a larger than average piece of fat. fat pigs I presume! This thick layer of fat gives each piece a really buttery flavour, not too sweet or burnt, the perfect flavour for the hairy bar fat.
As the pack goes on you see loads of smaller bits, not dust, just smaller bits. Some of them stick to the big bits because of the fat. Nice little bits with lots of crunch. Generally, the smaller pieces seem to have less crunch in the world of pork scratchings, but not with this variety.
At the end of the bag, I tip the last remaining bits into my mouth and I experience a new flavour of bacon which is nice. The last pieces are also not overly salty which does tend to happen with some varieties of larger bags.
In conclusion crispy, fatty, sweet, salty, good.
