Black Country Snacks, Big Bag Crunch Jalapeno Review

Hairy Bar Snack Review:

The Bag

This is probably the biggest bag of pork crunch currently available in the UK. It has the air of an American bag of ‘chips’ about it. 80g of pork crunch is a large sitting for one person or a regular sitting for 3 people.

The Review

There is almost no smell to the pork crunch in this bag, there is a very slight Jalapeno smell, nothing bacony nothing fishy.

There are loads (80g) of big light and puffy pieces. They are all very light in colour with an added orangy/brown flavouring dust over all the pieces. They have a nice light and crunchy bite, not gluey.

The Jalapeno flavour is very good. So often we note that the Jalapeno flavour seems green and bitter and raw rather than warm and smokey and spicy. These fall into the latter category which is nice. The heat from the chilli is hotter than expected. I have a fairly high chilli tolerance, so bear this in mind.

Perfectly salted, not too little at the beginning and too much at the end.

We always like a few undercooked pieces, small curlers to make a pleasant change in a bag of massive puffers. variety is the spice of life which is why normal pork scratchings are amazing.

This bag is really too big for a single one person sitting, but I persevere in the name of research!

Towards the end, I look forward to the usual small amount of dust and bits, but am shocked. There’s more dust and bits at the bottom of this bag, than I have ever seen in a single bag. Granted we began with a big bag in the first place but this is unusual. Usually, the dust is a sign of a lot of disruption & movement in transit. This bag is nearing its best before date, so maybe they have been travelling around the country during lockdown looking for a receptive retailer.

There must be around 40 or 50 very large pinches of dust (see picture). The dust is slightly saltier and a bit hotter than the rest of the bag. A strange end to a really nice bag of pork crunch.

      Hi Carl,
We appreciate your review, but feel that you may have missed the point a little.
This is a website about Pork Scratchings in general. You can leave a review about their taste, smell, colour, saltiness, you know, a food review. Maybe we didn’t make this clear enough on the site.
You seem to have an issue with either the people from whom you purchased the item(s), or the shipping company used to deliver the item(s).
If you are complaining about a product or service, I suggest you indicate who these people are in your review, maybe name them or add links to their websites. I know this takes time to research, but it helps, in the long run, to spend a bit of time on these things. Without this information, some of my visitors may be under the impression that Hairy Bar Snacks is at fault somehow, which we can’t be, because we do not sell pork scratchings.
So, If your issue is with the company who make them, you need to contact ‘Black Country Snacks’ directly. Or maybe it’s the company you used to purchase the snacks, perhaps ‘Amazon‘ or ‘eBay’. If your issue is with the shipping, you need to contact the courier used, this could be ‘Royal Mail’ or ‘Hermes’ or maybe even ‘Amazon‘. You will probably have been given a tracking number, which may help.
There is always recourse for an item that has not arrived.
If you spent more than £100 on pork scratchings (or any other product) then you can use ‘section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act’ which protects consumers who pay by card, if something goes wrong. Here is a handy link https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/section75-protect-your-purchases/ which explains it.
If you spend less than £100 there’s still a way to claw back your money, you can use the ‘chargeback’ service provided by your card issuer. Here is another handy link https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/how-do-i-use-chargeback.
If your issue is with ‘Black Country Snacks’ then we can see why you may have chosen Hairy Bar Snacks to vent your spleen. It may help other scratching buyers. But all other possible parties in this story would seem to not be relevant to the term ‘pork scratchings review’.
A note about ‘Black Country Snacks’… They produce hundreds of thousands of bags of scratchings yearly. They have always been kind and courteous when getting in contact with us. They produce a great range of delicious scratchings.
I have looked on their website and can see that you can’t buy directly from them. They provide links to their products via ‘Amazon‘ or ‘eBay’. If you used either of these companies to buy your scratchings, I would be asking them for help.
Once again, we appreciate your review and have left it on the site unedited.
      HBS
