The Bag

This is something a little different for once. The scratchings come in a large resealable bag. This type of bag is good for most people because these scratchings weigh an impressive 120g. FYI, 120g is quite large for a bag of scratchings, so you may need to eat these over a few sittings.

The logo and information are on a circular sticker on the front of the bag. The ingredients listed on the bag are quite vague. it simply states pork rind, salt, flavourings. Fewer ingredients would seem like a good / more natural thing, but ‘flavourings’ seems quite vague in the current climate where everyone is intolerant to something or other.

The Smell

These smell nice. As we know, sometimes pork scratchings can taste nice, but smell bad… …not these. They smell different to any others we have tried, but we don’t know why. It’s hard to put your finger on it without a second opinion.

The Scratchings

The scratchings feel damp. Actually, they are just a bit oily. There’s no added oil on the ingredients, so the oily feel must just be the pork fat that they are cooked in. It’s like they have not been shaken dry or had the fat absorbed by some kitchen roll. They are a bit like a nice chip. You know what I mean. This is not a bad thing, it’s just an observation.

They taste lovely and are perfectly cooked. A golden brown and bubbly skin. There are no super hard pieces. I doubt you will break a tooth if you try these.

They are not too salty, which you notice at the start as being not salty enough. But with a bag of this size, by the time you get halfway through them, you realise that the amount of salt is just right for this size bag.

They are nice and crispy, like the double or triple cooked varieties we often see these days.

There are a few pieces with meat still attached. The meat is not black and dry as we often find, but nice like the outside pieces of meat you find on a joint of roast pork. We didn’t find any pieces with hairs on them which is disappointing.

All the pieces seem to be covered in the tiny dusty bits we usually find at the bottom of the bag. So instead of finishing the bag and enjoying the dust at the bottom, there is none. Not a problem.

At the bottom, there is no dust, but there are a lot of super tiny pieces the size of tiny gravelly stones if you know what I mean.

In conclusion

Every now and then you come across a bag of pork scratchings that tastes nothing like what has come before. This happened the first time we tried RGS Crispy Crackly Pork Bites because they were the first triple cooked scratchings we tasted.

These are the same. Different, nice, perfect.

More Flavours (with dips)

We were also sent a LOT of other flavours (12 bags in total), each of which seems to be packaged with an additional pot of sauce/jam. See below. We are really looking forward to all of these, reviews coming soon.
