The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell, London – Pub Review
Scratching brand on sale: Midland Snacks – Traditional Pork Scratchings
Scratching location: A very good selection of traditional snacks, with scratchings prominently displayed.
Pub review: A very traditional pub with wooden floors and an open fire when cold. lots of small seating areas and a so-called ‘pulpit’ mezzanine level. The Jerusalem Tavern can be traced back at least to the 14th Century. One of the oldest pubs in London, it has occupied a few sites in its current street and has been at 55 Britton Street since 1720. The current shop front was added around 1810. Many famous luminaries have links with the pub, including; Samuel Johnson, William Hogarth, Oliver Goldsmith, David Garrick and with the young Handel.
It’s the only pub in London owned by the Suffolk-based St. Peter’s brewery and serves their excellent fine ales. A range of wines as well as excellent traditional meals. The pub is very small gets very busy quite often. Highly recommended.
