Scratch My Pork Smokey Pork Crackling Review
This bag of smokey pork crackling is from ‘Scratch My Pork’ who are based in Ireland. On the bag, it says ‘pork crackling with an Irish twist’.
MSG Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, High in protein is written across the top of the bag, obviously ‘we’ know all about this, but sometimes it’s a good idea to make these things obvious. I can see a pork crackling newbie looking at these and wondering what’s it all about, so the info on the top is a good idea for them.
Anyway, back to the Smokey Crackling.
We open the bag and the smell is really is definitely smokey. Smokey is not really a flavour, but more of a ‘feel’. It’s a nice smokey smell, not a burnt smokey smell if you know what I mean. ‘Smoked’.
I look inside the bag and these are darker in colour than the Salted and the Salt ‘n’ Vinegar varieties, this can only be because of the added flavour because I’m guessing the plain crackling (from which these come) is all from the same batch before the flavour is added.
There is a really good range of sizes and shapes (If they are all the same, it’s boring). But oddly, these were all a little bit smaller than the other varieties. Strange, but that could just be down to patterns in randomness.
The skin is light and bubbly, as you would expect with pork crackling, and there are no teeth breakers, even though there is a warning on the back. I suppose in today’s health and safety going mad culture, it’s better to cover yourself with a warning. Sadly there aren’t any hairy ones… hmmm. These are not hard evil pork scratchings, they are light pork crackling.
They are not that salty, so for a bag of this size, and if you are only going to have one bag, they could do with a little more salt for our tastes. Perfect for a session.
There are not many little bits at the bottom of this bag, but there is a fair amount of flavour dust. This dust is not saltier than the regular pieces, but it does have a lot of intense flavour. A nice finish.
There’s no added MSG, but there is 5% Smokey BBQ glaze (it says on the back), plus ‘Smoke Flavour’ (who knew that that was a thing?), Paprika, Garlic, Onion and Spices all of which are nice. For those of you on the keto diet, then there is 7.15g of carbs per 100g.
